Biodiesel is a renewable biofuel, a form of diesel fuel, derived from biological sources like vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled greases, and consisting of long-chain fatty acid esters. It is typically made from fats.

The main types of biodiesel are FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester), which is most common and made through transesterification, and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), also known as renewable diesel, which is made using a hydrotreating process and is chemically more like petroleum diesel. Another related fuel is biomethanol, produced from sources like landfill gas and used in blended fuels, while biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuels are a synthetic type made from biomass through thermo-chemical conversion.
